Overview

Working in Qatar: what you need to know

Qatar recruits Nepali workers for construction and maintenance, hospitality, security, driving, cleaning and healthcare support. Large infrastructure built for the 2022 World Cup now needs operations and maintenance staff, and the hospitality and services sectors continue to hire.

Qatar's labour reforms since 2020 changed the employment landscape. Exit permits were largely abolished, a non-discriminatory minimum wage was introduced, and the requirement for an employer's no-objection certificate to change jobs was removed.

FAQs

Common questions about working in Qatar

Is it safe for Nepali workers to go to Qatar?

It is safer when you go through a DOFE-licensed agency, with a written and attested contract, a Labour Permit issued before departure and the mandatory pre-departure orientation. Avoid anyone offering a free visa or free ticket without a DOFE licence. Power Support holds DOFE Licence No. 1710/081/082.

What type of visa do Nepali workers need for Qatar?

The usual route is the Work Visa. The employer starts the process with a demand letter in Qatar. After DOFE approval, Power Support helps with the document file and visa processing.

How much does it cost to go to Qatar from Nepal?

Costs depend on the destination and the job, and service charges are limited by DOFE rules. They usually include the medical, visa, orientation, insurance and the agency service charge. Ask for a written breakdown before you pay, keep every receipt, and use the DOFE Fee Estimator on this site to check the usual items.

What documents are required to work in Qatar?

Common requirements are a valid passport with enough remaining validity, passport photographs, academic or trade certificates, a CV and a medical report from an approved clinic. Gulf countries also take biometrics on arrival. See the Document Checklist on this site and ask us about the exact list for your job.

How long is the flight from Kathmandu to Qatar?

The flight from Kathmandu to Qatar is around 4.5 hours in the air. Several airlines fly from Kathmandu to Gulf cities, some direct and some with a connection.

Can I change my employer in Qatar after arriving?

Gulf labour rules on changing employers have been relaxed in recent years, but conditions differ by country and change over time. Your contract and notice period still apply. Read the country guide above and check current rules with the labour authority before you resign.

How do I send money home from Qatar?

Banks and licensed remittance companies can send money to Nepali bank accounts. Compare exchange rates and fees before you choose. Avoid unlicensed hundi channels.

What is Qatar's minimum wage and does it apply to Nepali workers?

Yes. Qatar's minimum wage applies to all workers regardless of nationality: QAR 1,000 per month basic, plus QAR 300 for food and QAR 500 for accommodation when the employer does not provide them. It is enforced through the Wage Protection System. Check current figures with the Ministry of Labour, as rules can be updated.

Can Nepali workers leave Qatar freely, or do they need employer permission?

Since the 2020 reforms, most workers can leave Qatar without an exit permit from their employer. A small number of senior or designated staff may still be covered by an employer-notification rule. You still need a valid passport and residence permit, and you should follow your contract's notice terms.
