Overview
Working in Romania: what you need to know
Romania is part of the EU, and joined the Schengen area for air and sea travel in March 2024 and for land borders in January 2025. Its manufacturing sector, including automotive, electronics and textiles, hires heavily because many Romanian workers have moved west for higher pay. Construction and logistics in Bucharest and other cities are also active.
This gap in the local workforce makes Romanian employers open to foreign workers who are reliable and stay for a full contract.
Why work here
Why Nepali workers choose Romania
- EU labour law protections, including paid leave and overtime pay
- Lower cost of living than Western Europe
- Manufacturing, construction and logistics employers recruiting from outside the EU
- Possible route to long-term residence after several years of legal stay
- Visa process is longer than the Gulf, so plan ahead
Pay and cost of living
What you can expect to earn and spend
General gross monthly ranges, shown as guidance only. Actual pay depends on the employer's demand letter and your contract.
| Typical monthly pay | NPR 95,000 to 180,000 |
|---|---|
| Cost of living | NPR 55,000 to 90,000 |
| Estimated saving per monthEstimate only | NPR 5,000 to 125,000 |
The saving figure is a simple estimate: the lowest pay minus the highest living cost, up to the highest pay minus the lowest living cost. It ignores tax, insurance, deductions and remittance fees. Local-currency figures use approximate exchange rates.
Savings
Wages in Romania are lower than in Western Europe, but so are rent and food. Savings depend on whether the employer provides shared housing, your city and your overtime. Ask for a written breakdown of salary, housing and deductions before you sign.

Worker rights
Your rights and legal protections in Romania
Romania applies EU-aligned labour law: a written contract, at least 20 working days of paid annual leave, a 40-hour standard working week, overtime compensation and enforcement by the Labour Inspectorate (Inspecția Muncii). Social insurance covers health and pension. Foreign workers normally enter on a long-stay work visa (D/AM) and then receive a residence permit that is linked to their employment.
After several years of legal residence, a worker may be able to apply for long-term residence. Citizenship is a separate and much longer process.
Embassy and emergency contacts
Nepal's diplomatic missions provide consular services, help with passport renewal and, in serious cases, support with disputes and repatriation. Which mission covers Romania depends on the country, so note its contact details before you travel.
Keep copies of your passport, visa, contract and employer details, and share them with your family. You can also call or WhatsApp our Kathmandu office at +977 9851062224.
Nepali community
Nepalis in Romania
Romania's Nepali community is smaller and newer than in the Gulf, but it is growing. Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca and Timișoara have the main concentrations. Facebook and WhatsApp groups are the main support network. Wise, Revolut and bank transfers are commonly used to send money home.
How the process works here
Step by step: Nepal to Romania
Romania deployment is longer than the Gulf because the employer first obtains a work permit (aviz de angajare) from the Romanian immigration authority, and then the worker applies for the long-stay visa at the Romanian mission handling Nepal (commonly in New Delhi). DOFE approval, medical examination and pre-departure orientation follow. Plan for a couple of months in total. Power Support helps with documentation and visa processing.

Common questions about working in Romania
Is it safe for Nepali workers to go to Romania?
It is safer when you go through a DOFE-licensed agency, with a written and attested contract, a Labour Permit issued before departure and the mandatory pre-departure orientation. Avoid anyone offering a free visa or free ticket without a DOFE licence. Power Support holds DOFE Licence No. 1710/081/082.
What type of visa do Nepali workers need for Romania?
The usual route is the Long-stay Work Visa (D/AM). The employer starts the process with a demand letter in Romania. After DOFE approval, Power Support helps with the document file and visa processing.
How much does it cost to go to Romania from Nepal?
Costs depend on the destination and the job, and service charges are limited by DOFE rules. They usually include the medical, visa, orientation, insurance and the agency service charge. Ask for a written breakdown before you pay, keep every receipt, and use the DOFE Fee Estimator on this site to check the usual items.
What documents are required to work in Romania?
Common requirements are a valid passport with enough remaining validity, passport photographs, academic or trade certificates, a CV and a medical report from an approved clinic. See the Document Checklist on this site and ask us about the exact list for your job.
How long is the flight from Kathmandu to Romania?
The flight from Kathmandu to Romania is around 9 hours in the air. Routes usually connect through a Gulf hub or Delhi, so total travel time is often 12 to 18 hours.
Can I change my employer in Romania after arriving?
In most European countries a residence and work permit is linked to the employer, so changing jobs usually needs a new permit or approval. Check the rules for Romania before you leave your employer.
