Destination Regions

Understanding the major destination regions

Each region offers a different balance of salary, lifestyle, visa process and community support. Here is a brief overview to guide your comparison.

Gulf

UAE, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait

  • ✓Employer-provided accommodation common
  • ✓Large Nepali community
  • ✓Short flight from Kathmandu
  • ✓Fast visa processing

  • →Extreme heat in summer
  • →Arabic is the primary language
  • →Kafala system (improving but still present)
  • →Limited freedom of movement for some workers

Europe

Romania, Croatia, Serbia

  • ✓Cooler climate
  • ✓Opportunity to settle long-term in some cases
Considerations
  • →Higher living costs reduce net savings

  • →Language barrier (Romanian, Croatian, Serbian)
  • →Colder winters require more clothing / heating costs

Southeast Asia

Malaysia

Strengths
  • ✓Shorter flight times
  • ✓Some roles include accommodation
  • ✓Familiar climate
  • ✓Growing demand for Nepali workers
Considerations
  • →Variable salary levels

How to Choose

Five factors that matter more than salary alone

Net savings, not gross salary

A NPR 150,000 salary in Europe with NPR 100,000 monthly living costs leaves less than a NPR 90,000 salary in the UAE where accommodation and food are free. Use the Cost of Living comparison and Salary Calculator together.

Visa difficulty and timeline

If you need income quickly, Gulf destinations win — employment visas process in weeks. Europe usually takes longer because of embassy appointments and document translation.

Language requirements

Gulf countries are manageable with English and basic Arabic phrases. European destinations need basic local-language skills for daily life. If you lack them, plan some months of preparation.

Community support

Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the UAE and Malaysia have large Nepali communities with shops, restaurants and mutual aid networks. Smaller destinations can feel more isolated — especially important for first-time migrants.

Long-term plans

Some European countries offer pathways to longer-term residence. Gulf is typically 2-year renewable contracts — excellent for savings but not for permanent settlement.

FAQ

Common questions about choosing a destination

Which country has the best combination of salary and savings?

For most Nepali workers, the Gulf countries (UAE, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait) often offer the best net savings when the employer provides accommodation and food. Europe (Romania, Croatia, Serbia) can offer higher gross wages but you usually pay for your own housing, and visa processes are longer. Malaysia sits between the two.

How difficult is the visa process for each region?

Gulf employment visas are typically straightforward — your employer applies directly and the visa arrives within 2–4 weeks once the demand letter is processed. European work visas require more documentation (translations, sometimes TB tests) and usually take longer. Timelines vary by employer and embassy, so ask for realistic dates in writing.

Does the time zone difference matter?

Yes, for your mental wellbeing and family communication. Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Kuwait are 2h 45m behind Nepal and the UAE is 1h 45m behind, so daily calls are easy. In winter Romania is 3h 45m behind and Croatia and Serbia 4h 45m behind (one hour less in summer). Malaysia is 2h 15m ahead.

Which destinations have the most Nepali workers?

The Gulf countries and Malaysia have the largest Nepali communities. A large community means Nepali shops, restaurants and social networks, and people who can help if you face difficulties. Nepali communities in Romania, Croatia and Serbia are smaller.
