The work

What does a construction do?

  • General site labour — shifting materials, mixing concrete, cleaning
  • Mason work — blockwork, plastering, finishing
  • Scaffolding assembly and formwork installation
  • Following safety procedures (harness, helmet, boots)
  • Assisting skilled trades (electricians, plumbers) during their work

A typical day

Sites typically run 07:00–17:00 with a long midday break in Gulf summers. Mid-tier construction workers earn overtime past 8 hours. Most Gulf sites provide transport from labour camp to site.

How employers assess candidates

Employers commonly check physical fitness and basic safety awareness. For masons and carpenters they may run a short practical test, such as laying blocks or reading a simple drawing.

Career path

Helper → General labour → Skilled mason / formwork specialist → Foreman → Site supervisor. Many move into related trades (welder, electrician) after 2–3 years.
